REFUGEE OF MINOR ASIA MUSEUM 1922
SKALA LOUTRON OF LESVOS
Skala of Loutra is a small seaside village in Mytilene, just 8 km from the Town of Mytilene. It was created in 1930 by the refugees who came from the shores of Minor Asia. The first kernel of the settlement was comprised by 25 refugee houses with 160 inhabitants, refugees from Fokea, Tsesma, Egglezonissi, Aivali, Dikeli, Tsantarli, Lazanos and Armara of Aidini. Today the settlement is consisted of 80 houses and 300 inhabitants.
On August 23rd of 2006 the Patriarch of Constantinople Vartholomeos inaugurated the “Refugee of Minor Asia” Museum, the only one in Lesvos island.
A small historic, folkloric museum of 130 sq. m. with 300 exhibits, heirlooms that refugees brought from their countries, historic documents, books, precious items holy icons, items from their day life, apparels and other exhibits. The greek colonization of Minor Asia, the “our East” as and many refugee constitutions are displayed through in-wall drawn maps. There is also an ad hoc library for Minor Asia.
The collection is constantly enriched with donations or lends by people who think that the last “treasures” of this civilization can’t be lost. Every item displayed has an extensive report for its birthplace, for the specific refugee and for the donator.
